Backyard Nature

This afternoon Julia and I headed into the backyard to fill bird feeders and check for critters.  We spotted this colorful turtle sunning himself on a log.  Julia asked how I knew the turtle was a boy...because it has bright orange and red on the shell.  Girls have dull yellow on their shells and necks.
After we filled the normal feeders, Julia and I put "Bark Butter Bit" pellets in the crevices of our huge white pine tree.  Nuthatches especially like finding these, and Rosie loves watching the nuthatches from her perch.
After we had filled the bird feeders and given the nuthatches their tree trunk treats, we just sat back and watched the birds eat.  Most of the birds that come to our feeders are not shy, and they didn't mind us hanging out with them.  This afternoon we also saw a garter snake swimming in the creek.  After all of the exciting things we saw, Julia commented, "Now I understand why people think nature is so cool!"
